The Greener Homes Loan is estimated to expire November 2025.

August 2025 Update
Status of the Canada Greener Homes Loan
- The program received an additional $600 million in funding in June 2025
- However, by July 2025, only about $444 million remained available, with trends suggesting the program could run out by November 2025—unless further federal top-up occurs.
- Once the money is depleted, applications are expected to close immediately.
What Might Come Next?
While there’s no official announcement yet of a successor to CGHL, there are strong indications and advocacy pushing for continued support:
- Efficiency Canada has called for updates to the program to reduce upfront barriers and improve speed of access, emphasizing the importance of continuing and evolving the loan to align with broader climate and housing goals.
- Proposals from figures like Mark Carney’s platform (related to the current federal government) suggest using carbon pricing revenues to fund consumer retrofits—like heat pumps—and promoting public–private cooperation in retrofit financing .
However, no specific details, funding commitments, or timelines have been publicly confirmed.
So, will the federal government introduce something new?
Possibly—but it’s not guaranteed or confirmed.
- The current loan program will likely close by late 2025 if no new funding is approved.
- Policymakers and observers are advocating for a revitalized or new program, but so far, no formal announcement has been made.
What you can do now:
- Act quickly if you’re planning energy-efficient upgrades—apply for the CGHL while funds remain available.
- Watch for announcements from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), CMHC, and the federal government about any new or replacement programs.
- Track developments in federal budgets, climate policy updates, and NRCan/CMHC announcements in the coming months.
In summary: The Greener Homes Loan is likely to wind down by November 2025, unless more funding is added. There’s discussion and pressure around creating a new, improved retrofit financing tool—but no federal program has been formally announced yet.
Earlier Post from Beginning of this Year.
Recently Matrick McMahon of Energuy posted on linkedin his projections of when the Greener Homes Loan will run out. This is his summary. The Greener Homes Loan (GHL) has been a game-changer for homeowners across Canada looking to invest in solar, windows, heat pumps, and energy-efficient upgrades—but the clock is ticking.
If you’re in solar sales, home improvement, or a homeowner planning to apply, you’ve probably wondered:
“How much time is left before the GHL runs dry?â€
We’ve been asking the same thing—and thanks to some sharp analysis by Patrick McMahon at Energuy, we’ve got a clearer picture.
What We Know So Far
Let’s start with the concrete data:
- ✅ June 2022 – $4.4 billion budget approved for the Greener Homes Loan
- ✅ January 22, 2024 – ~53,000 loans approved, averaging $24,000 per loan
- ✅ Fall Economic Statement (Dec 16, 2024) – “Nearly 100,000 loans approved”
Assuming the FES data reflected loan approvals up to November 30, 2024, that’s nearly 47,000 new approvals over 10 months—or roughly 4,700 loans/month.
So, How Long Will It Last?
If nothing changes—loan amounts stay flat, and approval rates remain steady—we’re looking at another 16 months of funding, which takes us to late March 2026.
That’s your best-case timeline if:
- The average loan size stays near $24,000
- No additional acceleration from new provincial incentives
- No change in how loan packages (e.g. solar vs. heat pumps) affect average value
What Could Accelerate the Burn Rate?
Two factors could change the pace dramatically:
1. New Provincial Incentives
Ontario recently introduced stackable energy upgrade programs. If more provinces follow, expect loan demand to spike—fast.
2. Shifting Project Types
Are more homeowners bundling solar + windows instead of just heat pumps? If so, average loan values may rise, speeding up budget depletion.
Why This Matters (Especially in Alberta)
For solar companies in Alberta, this is critical. Many deals hinge on access to 0% financing through the GHL. If the budget maxes out sooner than expected, and no federal extension is announced, we’ll see:
- Increased urgency from homeowners (good)
- Increased friction and funding delays (not so good)
- Possible drop-off in close rates for solar installs

In Closing…
The Greener Homes Loan won’t last forever—and is estimated it will run out of funding by March 2026, and its pace may accelerate. Stay ahead by watching approval trends, bundling smartly, and getting projects approved sooner than later.
